What is Consciousness?

So, why does consciousness feel so much like "me?" At what level is it generated? At the molecular level? Or, at the atomic level? Or, at the sub-atomic level perhaps? Could it be that the brain merely processes EMF waves, as everything else does throughout nature?

I'm looking at the refrigerator in the other room. And, although it doesn't come right out and say, "Hey, I'm a refrigerator and I'm aware that I'm a refrigerator," how does it hold itself together and maintain its integrity as a refrigerator? Obviously there must be some form of "awareness" there at the most basic level.

So, how do we know that the mind doesn't "channel" something similar, except that perhaps it employs a means of amplifying it?
